Academic Planning 101

Building your individual quarter-by-quarter academic plan for the remaining time you have at UCSD can be daunting. Whether you plan to graduate early, or just do a normal track, we can help you sort it out!

When you create a personalized academic plan, it is a tentative plan since it could change for many reasons: course availability, or adding or dropping courses, etc. The plan you will be building here is a live document, so you can change it each time you enroll in courses. The plan will also calculate the units that you enter, making it easy to ensure that you are meeting university requirements for needed units.

But first thing first: Your plan starts with you!

The below guidance should simplify completing your academic plan.

Please contact us if you have questions.

Step One: Understand UCSD & HDS Major Policy

Requirements for all HDS majors

Please make sure you understand the program requirements for all HDS majors:

  • All courses taken for any HDS major must be taken for a letter grade
(Any course, regardless of subject code.)

  • Students must receive a grade of C– or better in any course counted toward fulfillment of HDS major requirements. D grades are not accepted.

  • HDS 1, HDS 60HDS 181, HDS 191, HDS 150 are required courses of all HDS majors and must be taken in residence. No substitutions will be approved.

Please make sure you understand the requirements for your chosen HDS major:

HDS Course Workload, Sequencing, and Special Enrollment

Please make sure you understand the prerequisite sequencing, content, and unit load for required HDS coursework:

Course Minimum Prerequisite When taken
HDS 1 (4 units) none 1st or 2nd year. Not offered in summer.
HDS 60 (4 units) College Algebra 1st - 3rd year
HDS 181 (*6 units) HDS 1, HDS 60, HDS Core 3rd or 4th year
Not offered in Summer.
HDS 191 (*6 units) HDS 181 4th year (or 3rd if graduating in 3 years).
Not offered in Summer.
HDS 150 (4 units) HDS 181 4th year (or 3rd if graduating in 3 years)
Not typically offered in Summer.

*6 unit courses require a significant time commitment.  HDS 191 includes an internship.
Make sure you are not overloading your schedule during the terms you plan to take HDS 181 & 191.

Please make sure you understand the special enrollment procedures of HDS 181,  HDS 191, and  HDS 150:

HDS 181, 191, and 150 require department approval to enroll. Enrollment in these courses are approved by individual seat, and are processed completely independent of the 1st/2nd pass enrollment system. If approved, enrollment will not be cleared until AFTER 2nd PASS.  Students use their 1st/2nd appointment time to secure other courses they need that term and/or waitlist other coursework.  Enrollment decisions are processed closer to 10th week.

Communications about how to enroll in these courses are sent quarterly through your UCSD email account to all Juniors and Seniors, as well as outlined in the following course webpages below. Please review these pages for more information:

Time-to-Completion Requirements

UCSD allows a certain number of quarter to complete your bachelors degree:

  • within six quarters for transfer students
  • within twelve quarters for first-year students

A common question is "can I finish on time?"  The answer is specific to each student, based on their personal academic history, schedule availability, and a host of factors.  But to begin to answer that question simply, lets start with a basic math exercise:

  1. Count up the number of classes you have left to take, from all requirements
    • Major
    • Minor
    • College/GE
    • Grad school prep

  2. Take this total and do the following two math exercises:

    • Divide the total number of classes by the number of classes you prefer to take per term
This will show your preferred pacing: the number of terms it would take you to complete your degree at a pace that is comfortable for you.

Does this pace fit with the number of terms you have left at UCSD? If yes, then your academic plan will be fairly doable.  If not, try the next exercise

    • Divide the total number of classes by the number of terms you have left at UCSD
This would give you the number of classes you would have to take each term (on average) in order to finish the HDS major on time.

Is the average more than 4.5 classes per term? If yes, you should consider how you can improve your time to degree, such as taking classes during summer school terms.

Obviously, this does not take into account all of the other things that can further complicate a quarter-by-quarter plan, such as scheduling conflicts and prerequisite sequencing.  But it gives you a starting point to reflect on.

If it looks like you will need to exceed your time limit in order to complete your bachelor's degree, please contact your college about the steps you will need to take.  More information can be found here.

Course Exceptions for HDS

Frequently, students ask about exceptions to HDS requirements. Below highlights the most common questions:

Step Two: Begin Course Planning

Note your Course Preferences for HDS

Using this worksheet, start with noting your course preferences for the HDS major

Start choosing classes you would like to use to fulfill your preferred HDS Major:

For each of the major requirements, review the course options in each category. Note your top three course choice preferences on the worksheet for fulfilling each requirement (for those major categories that provide a list of options).

Double check if your choices can also fulfill general education classes for your college. Lower division choices (numbered 1-99) can usually overlap between major and college, with some limitations (Muir Students, I'm talking about you). You will use these ranked course preferences for later steps in building your plan.

Obviously, if there's only one choice for a specific major requirement, that will be the class you take.

  • There are 19 courses required for the BA (7 lower division, 12 upper division)
  • There are 21 courses required for the BS (8 lower division, 13 upper division)

Note: each class can only fulfill ONE major requirement.  If a class appears in more than one area, you can choose where it applies, but it only counts once in the major.

For coursework you have already completed, this worksheet can be used as a progress check for prospective majors to track completed classes in the right hand column. Note that current HDS majors should compare this worksheet to their current degree audit (<--please run a fresh one) to double check that their major classes are counting as they believe they should.  Please contact us if you see discrepancies.

Review When Courses are planned to be offered

Next, Review the HDS Annual Course Offerings for classes offered this year in the HDS major. https://hdsciences.ucsd.edu/courses/course-offerings/index.html

Compare what is offered this year to your top course preferences you listed in your HDS Curriculum Planning Worksheet so you can begin to plan what to take for this year, and what you might leave for subsequent years. Under the course titles for each HDS class, we note which quarter it is typically offered from year-to-year, so you can plan for subsequent years.

Depending what year you are in, you should focus on completing your HDS coursework in this order (for students on a normal 4-year track. Students on an accelerated track would compress this timeline):

1st & 2nd year: Lower Division (Major Prep)
2nd & 3rd year: Core (HDS 110-133)
3rd & 4th year: Development Series & Methods (HDS 181, 191, elective)
4th/Final Year: Senior Capstone (HDS 150)

Start an Academic planning Worksheet

Make a copy of a blank Academic Planning worksheet to begin laying down remaining coursework based on what you noted is offered from your preferred courses for this year.

Are there any requirements recommended to be completed this year, but the course you wanted to take for that requirement is not being offered? Consider the 2nd option you listed on your course planning worksheet instead.  Otherwise, remember that
your plan is flexible--if you'd like to move around a few classes and postpone a requirement until later in order to take your top preferred class, you can.

For later academic years: Under the course titles for each HDS class, we note which quarter it is typically offered.  For non-HDS classes, you can compare grids from prior years to see which classes are offered consistently from year-to-year, and which terms. Classes like BICD 100 and PSYC 101 are offered every quarter.  Specialized topics are usually only offered once  a year.

If it feels too daunting to start your plan with a blank worksheet, we do also have pre-filled plans you can start with that are very basic, and just lays out HDS classes by category, which you can then customize by removing the requirements you ahve already completed and customzing the remaining ones with your preferred course.  Note that these pre-filled templates only list HDS major coursework, and do not incorporate your college GEs

  • Generic HDS 4-year plan (<-click link to make a copy).
Includes all 21 courses for the BS major (or 19 for the BA), spread out over 4 years

  • Generic HDS 2-year plan (for transfers and late starters) (<-click link to make a copy).
Includes all upper division classes, and 3 lower division classes--assuming that some lower division courses (4 for the BA, 5 for the BS) were already completed prior.  If you need to complete more lower division courses than that, please add them to the plan.

  • Generic accelerated HDS 3-year plan (<-click link to make a copy).
For those of you starting UCSD as first years and trying to graduate in 3 years due to a lot of AP and CC courses taken in high school.  Includes all 21 courses for the BS major (or 19 for the BA) and you just need to remove those you have already received credit for before customizing

  • Template HDS Pre-med academic plan (<-click link to make a copy).
Special note: If you are pre-med/pre-health, you can use our pre-filled 4-year Pre-Med HDS academic plan worksheet to get started. If you are not specifically pre-med, but are planning PA, Physical Therapy, Nursing, etc. remove whatever coursework on the template plan in red that is not needed if your pre-health career preparation doesn't specifically require it (or you already took it). For example: If your pre-health career doesn't require Organic Chemistry, you can remove the Chem 40 series.

Regardless of whether you use a blank plan, or a pre-filled one, at the top right corner of this worksheet, make sure you consider any units that you transferred in, and enter those units inside the Transfer Units box. This includes community college units, as well as IB units, AP units, and A-Level units.

Check your College GEs on the UCSD Academic Plans site

Once you have laid down your HDS major coursework, visit the UCSD Academic Plans site to also incorporate your remaining college requirements, if you have any left. This website includes examples of basic pre-made plans that combine both your Major and College requirements. There are both 4-year and 2-year plans available. These will suggest appropriate course sequencing for both major and college together. You will want to select your entering year and appropriate major.

Step Three: Check Your Work!

Review your plan with an HDS Advisor

Want an HDS advisor to look over your plan so far?  We'd be happy to help! You can go about it one of two ways:

Option 1: Submit your plan for review on the Virtual Advising Center (VAC)--Start by using the Ask a Question feature on VAC
  • For topic, choose "Long-term planning"
  • Direct your question to "Human Developmental Sciences"
  • Copy the google link to your academic plan worksheet (make sure you are coping the editable link for your plan), and in the question box, put the following message:

    Hello,

I'm an HDS major and would like the draft of my long-term academic plan reviewed. I plan to pursue the [BA/BS/Aging/Equity&Diversity] major, and my career interests are in _________ . A link to my academic plan is here:

    [insert link to academic plan]

    Thank you for your help.

Option 2: Get live feedback on your plan by requesting an HDS advising session here (and specify long-term planning as the reason for your request): https://hdsciences.ucsd.edu/advising/appointments.html

For the advising session, You will need the following items:

  1. Access to a computer (not your phone) for the advising session (as you will need to work with the advisor on you plan).  If remote, expect to turn on your camera.
  2. Your completed HDS Curriculum Planning Worksheet
  3. Your draft Academic Planning worksheet (Google Sheet)

If you feel you will need significant help in creating your academic plan, please let us know, as then we may need to block off more time for your appointment.

Note that an HDS advisor will be verifying only HDS classes on your plan.  You have other College and University requirements to complete, as well as any additional requirements such as a planned minor,  double major, or graduate school preparation (see remaining steps).

If you have a minor or double major: Review your plan with their department advisor

HDS majors frequently consider minoring or double majoring after completing a plan and realizing they may have extra space for more coursework.  Common disciplines for major-minor or double major combinations with HDS include the following:

Anthropology
Biology
Cognitive Science
Communication
Education Studies
History

Linguistics
Literature

Psychology
Public Health
Sociology
Urban Studies & Planning

To meet with your intended minor or 2nd major department advisor, Use the Ask a Question feature on VAC to  see how to get your plan reviewed for their requirements.

Review your plan with a College Advisor

You should meet with your college advisor to review your plan and make sure it includes all of the following:

  • The General Education requirements of your undergraduate college. Which can be found on your colleges Website or the General Catalog

  • UCSD's Universitywide requirements. These include the following:
    • Minimum of 180 units
    • Minimum of 60 upper division units (courses numbered here as 100-199)
    • Minimum GPA of 2.0 (UC courses)
    • Senior Residence Requirement: 35 of final 45 units must be at UC
    • Maximum of 25% of UCSD units may be taken for Pass grades
    • Maximum of 49% of UCSD units may be taken remotely (R courses)
    • Completion of university requirement courses listed below (ELWR, AHI, DEI, JTCCER)

Use the Ask a Question feature on VAC to ask your college how to get your plan reviewed.
