Step One: Understand HDS & Double Major Policy

General Overview

The below map outlines how a double major at UCSD is prepared and routed for review and approval.

Double major roadmap

The following sections on this page are specific to preparing a double major with HDS, and includes helpful tips and pre-filled forms to make the double major process easier!

Requirements for HDS

Please make sure you understand the program requirements for all HDS majors:

  • All courses taken for any HDS major must be taken for a letter grade.
(Any course, regardless of subject code.)

  • Students must receive a grade of C– or better in any course counted toward fulfillment of HDS major requirements. D grades are not accepted.

  • HDS 1, HDS 60HDS 181, HDS 191, HDS 150 are required courses of all HDS majors and must be taken in residence. No substitutions will be approved.

Please make sure you understand the prerequisite sequencing, content, and unit load for required HDS coursework:

Course Minimum Prerequisite When taken
HDS 1 (4 units) none 1st or 2nd year
HDS 60 (4 units) College Algebra 1st - 3rd year
HDS 181 (*6 units) HDS 1, HDS 60, HDS Core 3rd or 4th year
HDS 191 (*6 units) HDS 181 4th year (or 3rd if graduating in 3 years)
HDS 150 (4 units) HDS 181 4th year (or 3rd if graduating in 3 years)

*6 unit courses require a significant time commitment.  HDS 191 includes an internship.
Make sure you are not overloading your schedule during the terms you plan to take HDS 181 & 191.

Please make sure you understand the special enrollment procedures of HDS 181,  HDS 191, and  HDS 150:

HDS 181, 191, and 150 require department approval to enroll. Enrollment in these courses are approved by individual seat, and are processed completely independent of the 1st/2nd pass enrollment system. If approved, your seat is saved and enrollment will not be cleared until AFTER 2nd PASS.  Students use their 1st/2nd appointment time to secure other courses they need that term and/or waitlist other coursework.  Enrollment decisions are processed closer to 10th week.

Communications about how to enroll in these courses are sent quarterly through your UCSD email account to all Juniors and Seniors, as well as outlined in the following course webpages below. Please review these pages for more information:

Please make sure you understand the requirements for your chosen HDS major:

Overlap Limits

Regardless of how many classes can potentially overlap between two majors, there are Limits on Course Overlap for double majors.

  1. All Lower division courses can overlap between the two majors (where applicable).
(Don't know if a class is LOWER division? At UCSD, they are numbered 1-99)

HDS Lower Division Coursework (BA has 7 classes, the BS has 8)
HDS 1, HDS 60 Two Social Sciences
1-2 Formal Skills Two Biological Sciences

  2. UPPER Division courses have limits on overlap.
(Don't know if a class is UPPER division? At UCSD, they are numbered 100-199)

So how many upper division courses can overlap between double majors?

The simplest answer is--usually--TWO courses.

This is because all majors have a minimum of 12 upper division courses, and double majors must have 10 upper-division courses (40 units) that are unique to each major.

In other words: 10 classes can't overlap--the rest can.

So: 12 classes - 10 unique classes = 2 overlapping classes allowed.

Example
Major 1
12 upper division classes
Major 2
12 upper division classes
Course One Course One
Course Two Course Two
Course Three Course Three
Course Four Course Four
Course Five Course Five
Course Six Course Six
Course Seven Course Seven
Course Eight Course Eight
Course Nine Course Nine
Course 10 Course 10
Remaining courses
11th class (Course Overlap)
12th Class (Course Overlap)

The HDS Bachelor of Arts is a major with a max of 12 upper division classes
So for the BA: only TWO upper division classes can overlap, max.

However, the correct answer  about overlaps is it actually depends on the double major combination.

Some majors have more than 12 classes, leaving more potential overlap courses.

The HDS Bachelor of Science has 13 upper division classes. So for the B.S...
13 classes - 10 unique classes = 3 classes that COULD overlap, if possible.

Example One: If the HDS BS major is combined with a major that has 14 classes:

HDS B.S. Major
13 upper division classes
Major 2
14 upper division classes
Course One Course One
Course Two Course Two
Course Three Course Three
Course Four Course Four
Course Five Course Five
Course Six Course Six
Course Seven Course Seven
Course Eight Course Eight
Course Nine Course Nine
Course 10 Course 10
Remaining Courses
Course 11: 1st Course Overlap
Course 12: 2nd Course Overlap
Course 13: 3rd Course Overlap
  14th Course (2nd Major)

Example Two: the HDS BS major is combined with a major that only has 12 classes

HDS B.S. Major
13 upper division classes
Major 2
12 upper division classes
Course One Course One
Course Two Course Two
Course Three Course Three
Course Four Course Four
Course Five Course Five
Course Six Course Six
Course Seven Course Seven
Course Eight Course Eight
Course Nine Course Nine
Course 10 Course 10
Remaining Courses
Course 11 (1st Course Overlap)
Course 12 (2nd Course Overlap)
Course 13 (HDS only)

Disciplinary Overlap Limits

To encourage breadth between the two majors, the total number of upper division (UD) HDS major classes from the 2nd major discipline/subject code is limited to 4 classes, regardless of course overlaps.

In other words, for upper division coursework:

  • A PSYC double major can only use a max of 4 Psyc classes for HDS—even if not overlapping them.
  • An ANTHRO double major can only use a max of 4 Anthro classes for HDS—even if not overlapping them.
  • EDS, COGS, BIO, etc. same limits.

Final limits on overlaps:

You can't choose two HDS majors as your double majors.

And generally that is true of any department--you can't choose two majors in the same unit.  The official campus policy on major combinations follows:

"The two majors you are requesting for a double major application may not be within the School of Engineering, nor, except with the approval of the Undergraduate Council, within a single department."

Time-to-Completion Requirements

Double majors must be completed within your normal time frame here at UCSD

  • within six quarters for transfer students
  • within twelve quarters for first-year students

A common question is "can I finish on time?"  The answer is specific to each student, based on their personal academic history, schedule availability, and a host of factors.  But to begin to answer that question simply, lets start with a basic math exercise:

  1. Count up the number of classes you have left to take, from all requirements
    • 1st major
    • 2nd major
    • Minor
    • College/GE
    • Grad school prep

  2. Take this total and do the following two math exercises:

    • Divide the total number of classes by the number of classes you prefer to take per term
This will show your preferred pacing: the number of terms it would take you to complete your double major at a pace that is comfortable for you.

Does this pace fit with the number of terms you have left at UCSD? If yes, then completing a double major should fit well with your academic plans.  If not, try the next exercise

    • Divide the total number of classes by the number of terms you have left at UCSD
This would give you the number of classes you would have to take each term (on average) in order to finish a double major on time.

Is the average more than 4.5 classes per term? If yes, you should reconsider if completing a double major is feasible, or what you can do to lower that average, such as taking classes during summer school terms.

Obviously, this does not take into account all of the other things that can further complicate a quarter-by-quarter plan, such as scheduling conflicts and prerequisite sequencing.  But it gives you a starting point to reflect on--if the math doesn't add up here, then it's probably better to consider a Major-Minor combination rather than a double major (see next section).

Should I just Minor in HDS?

HDS Minors can be completed in less than a year and include 7 classes: HDS 1 and 6 upper division classes.

If you are able to maximize overlaps (HDS 1, and two upper division courses with your major), it is only 4 additional classes to obtain a HDS minor.

However, the HDS minor does NOT include HDS 181, HDS 191 (the internship) or  HDS 150--these courses are restricted to majors only.

See this page on declaring an HDS minor

Below outlines what specific requirements are the same between the major and minor curriculums, as well as what is different

Course Exceptions for HDS

Frequently, students ask about exceptions to HDS requirements based on completing a double major.  Below highlights the most common questions:

Step Two: Begin The Application Process

Choose Preferred Courses for HDS

Using this worksheet

Start with noting your course preferences for the HDS major: Look at the course list for your specific HDS major, here:

For each of the major requirements (19 courses for the BA, 21 for the BS), review the course options in each category (you can click the course titles for a description of each class option).

For each requirement, note your top three course choices for fulfilling it (or the course you have already taken to fulfill it). Obviously, if there's only one choice for a specific major requirement, that will be the class you take.

remember the limits on overlap when making course choices.

You will use your top course preference in each category for creating the initial draft of your double major petition.  The alternate options can be backup if your topic choices do not fit within your quarter by quarter plan.

Note: each class can only fulfill ONE major requirement.  If a class appears as a choice in more than one area, you can choose where it applies, but it only counts once in the major.

List Coursework on Your Double Major Petition

Take your top choices from the courses preference worksheet, and place them on a double major petition.

The petition should have ALL classes listed on it: 19 classes for the BA, 21 for the BS.

For the lower division section
Please list ALL lower division courses (numbered 1-99) here in this section, even if they overlap

Since there are only 6 lines in this section, you can put more than one course on each line, (Example: BILD 1, 2) to fit all 7-8 of the lower division classes.

Not 100% sure which class you want to take for the requirement? That's ok in this section--You could also just list the requirement name (Example: "Two Social Sciences") on one line.  See example:

BS example:

HDS 1, HDS 60 Two Social Sciences
Two Formal Skills BILD 1, 2

For the upper division section
If you plan to overlap any UPPER DIVISION courses (numbered 100-199), those SPECIFIC COURSE NUMBERS must be listed on the petition, in the bottom section where it says "List each upper division course that overlaps to satisfy requirement in both majors"

Note that this is the one area on your form that MUST list specific classes and can't just say "elective" or HDS 1**. The Degree Audit programmers need to encode these overlaps on your degree audit in order for the two majors to correctly overlap them, so specific courses are required here. (And NOTE: if you change up your overlaps, a revised form will be needed to update the overlaps).

The remaining 10+ upper division courses for each major that are NOT overlapping go above that area, in the section that says "Upper-Division (Do not list overlaps or extra)"  You can list degree categories rather than course numbers in this area, if unsure of course choices.

Need an example?   <--This shows a double major form between Biology and History, with NO overlaps

Want a prefilled example for HDS, with overlaps?

Theses two examples (a BA and a BS) both show TWO upper division overlaps for the Biological CORE and Biological DEVELOPMENT courses.

Feel free to download and edit the course lists and intended overlaps as needed. Note: Both of these examples presume HDS as the "to be added" major.  If you are already an HDS major adding a different one, move the HDS information to the left side of the form for "current major".

On the second page of the form, you must complete the following:

  1. A brief Statement of Purpose explaining your reasoning for completing two majors.

Start an Academic Plan Worksheet

Download a copy of a blank Academic Planning worksheet to get started on your academic plan.

If it feels too daunting to start with a blank worksheet, we do also have pre-filled plans you can start with that are very basic, and just lays out HDS classes by category, which you can then customize (see later steps).  Note that these pre-filled templates only list HDS major coursework.

Choose the plan that best reflects the amount of time you have left at UCSD

  • Generic HDS 4-year plan (<-click link to make a copy).
Includes all 21 courses for the BS major (or 19 for the BA), spread out over 4 years

  • Generic HDS 3-year plan (<-click link to make a copy).
Includes all 21 courses for the BS major (or 19 for the BA) and you just need to remove those you have already received credit for before customizing

  • Generic HDS 2-year plan(<-click link to make a copy).
Includes all upper division classes, and 3 lower division classes--assuming that some lower division courses (4 for the BA, 5 for the BS) were already completed prior to you choosing to double major.  If you need to complete more lower division courses than that, please add them to the plan.

Regardless of whether you use a blank plan, or a pre-filled one, at the top right corner of this worksheet, make sure you put in all units you have earned to date inside the Transfer Units box.

You will next need to modify this plan by replacing the degree requirements (such as "HDS Core") with specific course numbers that you listed on your double major petition or listed on your
HDS Curriculum Planning Worksheet (see next step)

Edit Your Academic Plan Worksheet

Now you can begin customizing your plan by entering in specific courses!

  1. Match up  each degree category on the Academic Planning worksheet to the preferred course  listed on your double major petition and/or HDS Curriculum Planning Worksheet, replacing the degree requirement with a specific course number.

  2. For this academic year: Review the HDS Annual Course Offerings for classes offered this year in the HDS major. https://hdsciences.ucsd.edu/courses/course-offerings/index.html

    1. Compare what is offered this year to the course choices you listed on your plan for this year.  Are there any requirements recommended to be completed this year, but the course you wanted to take for that requirement is not being offered? Consider one of the alternate options you listed on your course planning worksheet instead.  Otherwise, remember that your plan is flexible--if you'd like to move around a few classes and postpone a requirement until later in order to take your preferred class, you can.

      O
ur four HDS majors have a lot of choices to fulfill your requirements, and many don’t *have to* be taken in a specific order, however the following 5 classes are required of ALL HDS majors, and must be taken in this order:

      HDS 1 & HDS 60 --> then HDS 181 (once junior/senior standing) -->  then HDS 191 & HDS 150 (senior standing)

(Note: they don't have to be taken back-to-back.)

      • HDS 1 is offered Fall and Spring
      • HDS 60, HDS 181, 191, and 150 are offered all year--Fall, Winter, and Spring.
      • HDS Core Courses (Numbered 110-133) should be completed before HDS 181.

    2. For later academic years: Under the course titles for each HDS class, we note which quarter it is typically offered.  For non-HDS classes, you can compare grids from prior years to see which classes are offered consistently from year-to-year, and which terms. Classes like BICD 100 and PSYC 101 are offered every quarter.  Specialized topics are usually only offered once  a year.

Submitting Your Double Major Petition for Approval

Once you have completed your forms, and (recommended) have had both majors have reviewed your draft double major form & academic plan for accuracy (and made any corrections/revisions), you will then need to route these documents SEQUENTIALLY for signature in order for your double major to be approved.

Please do not send them to all three offices at the same time, as we all need to sign the same form.
Once you obtain a signature from one office, please then route the signed form to the next office.

Please route them in this order (if you don't know where to submit the forms themselves, please send a VAC message to the unit in question):

  1. First Major
  2. Second Major
  3. College academic advising office for final review.

To send your petition to HDS, please have the following documents ready to upload in our below HDS Double Major submission form:

  1. Your completed Double Major Petition (PDF).
    1. Don't forget to Complete the Statement of Purpose on page 2!

  2. Your completed Academic Planning worksheet (Google Sheet)

  3. Required for HDS submission only: Your completed HDS Curriculum Planning Worksheet

To Check the status of your DMP once you have routed it to both majors and then submitted it to your college:

  • Your College Academic Advising Office will notify you regarding the status of your request via the Virtual Advising Center.
  • View your Academic History to confirm that both majors appear online. Allow five working days for processing after approval by the college.

Note: You must submit your double major petition and have it approved by both departments, and your college, in order for it to be official.
  1. Please review the Academic Senate policy on double majors (A-3) for more information.
