Organization and Responsibilities Description
Birch Aquarium at Scripps is the public exploration center for the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. It provides ocean science education through creative exhibits, programs, and activities designed to help visitors use critical thinking and make science relevant to their daily lives. Students guide school children, families, and visitors from around the world in learning about the ocean and environmental conservation, while showcasing the groundbreaking research produced by Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
Message from the Site Mentor
Some exhibits, such as the tide pools, require additional training prior to volunteering, so the student should communicate interests right away to the site mentor. Students must get approval for topic of study prior to commencing research. Students must return volunteer shirt upon completion of service (if applicable).

Orientation Requirement
Once placement is confirmed, students must arrange an orientation with the site mentor.
Check-In Procedure
Upon arrival, students should log in at the volunteer lounge.
Research Availability
Ideal days are Tuesday - Thursday between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., but willing to discuss alternatives. Recommend weekend hours for optimal visitor traffic.
Dress Code
Neat, casual clothing appropriate for a place of business. Closed toed shoes are required. Shorts worn to a length of 3 inches above the knee are acceptable. Volunteer shirt may be provided.
Clearance Requirements
- Letter of clearance from the HDS Field Research Coordinator
- Completed online volunteer application
- Volunteer Membership Fee ($30)
